Embers
Deformeathing Production
I have played this album on my music player with volumes turned quite up, because Embers has a good sound of guitars and sometimes, a little mechanical work of drums, which makes the music of this Polish band sounds splendid, like the sound could break every wall on their way, at any time. It is not industrial album (unless you like some of that cold and loud beats of drums). Surely, Moanaa is more about post-metal in the first place, with elements of black metal (obscure guitar passages enchanted in chaos). However, album is brutal in its own way and only few times chaotic in creative way. The band predominantly focuses on clear song-writing, minor hooks and memorable, atmospheric arrangements in music, rather than on disordering it all somehow. Album sound very heavy, songs have guitar harmonies, a lot of groove that also comes with spacey, post-metal leads played by guitarists. First two tracks of the album feel very good in terms of getting into the music of Moanaa and liking what they do - I have listened their music for the very first time.
Opening song Nothing is inspiring to my brains because of diversity and awesome guitar layers – great mixture of post-rock and post-black metal.
Track called Lie is a space drifter with some ambience moments, incredible atmosphere and swarming black metal riffs. Still, they managed to keep music aggressive in spots where it should be, and for me, it is a very strong, and very metal song as well.
A little let down, eventually, is a grey song entitled Triad, which is pretty calm in first few minutes where you can hear clean vocals (better part of the song). Later, vocalist screams badly, and there is no music chemistry in this fragment of the track as it is in first two songs of the album. When in the end, song turned toward post-metal with melodic leads ala Paradise Lost, it actually has started to sounds pretty cool again.
Inflexion is another so so track with very bassy sound and heavy riffs, which also involves atmospheric fragments with mysteriously humming vocals (nice!) while harsh metal-guitar distortions are turned off. The track is also getting better in the end of fifth minutes but overall, good moments do not make a good song.
Expire is an interesting, dark post-rock instrumental song with trance bass lines that remind me a funeral march.
S/T track is very groovy and heavy, exploring the sound and ideas of the band toward post-metal with progressive elements, more dynamics and faster tempos. Beside songs like Nothing, Lie, and perhaps Expire, Embers is another one that represents the band from their better side.
