Wreck-Defy
Remnants Of Pain
Inverse Records
Wreck-Defy is a Canadian thrash metal band formed in 2016 by Matt Hanchuck. Remnants Of Pain is their second album, produced by Juan Urteaga (Machine Head, Vicious Rumors, Heathen etc).
All bass lines were recorded by one and the only Greg Christian whose past is known for everything but classic Testament albums like The New Order, Practice What You Preach, Legacy and more. There are few moments on this album where rhythm section sounds tight, like in that Bay Area band. Particularly in superb aggressive and little more technical tracks like 18oz of Chrome and Blackend Cloth.
Matt Hanchuck (guitars) prepared another surprise by hiring a singer Aaron Randall (ex Annihilator – Set The World On Fire) who has recorded high and melodic vocals for Remnants Of Pain with easy to catch refrains on the fly. I have to tell you that he sings very different than on that Annihilator album and so, the points go for Wreck-Defy for not repeating the past when comes to this element of metal craft. Drummer on the album is Dave O'Neal.
The album has a vibe of classic thrash but they kind of sound half Canadian (Flotsam and Jetsam, Annihilator), half like California Bay Area thrash. Nothing to be ashamed of, I love all those bands and it`s okey with me when I hear such influences in their music. Still, Wreck-Defy have original melodic songs (Looking Back), something for head bangers (Killing The Children, very sharp Riverview) and nice ballad track (Angels And Demons). In The Divide and Art Of Addiction there are some power thrash heavy metal influences going along. Of course, the band also strikes with tons of old/new school thrash metal riffs, infectious guitar shredding and solos. Probably, when you will listen to their songs, they shall beat the crap out of you.
Summarizing, it`s solid album, songs differ from each other and what binds the music is a wall of well anticipated thrash metal sound. Perhaps Remnants Of Pain won`t be considered any milestone album over time but it does not really matter for me, there are mostly strong tunes on it that cause that positive adrenaline rush in my body system.
The album`s premiere on 27th September 2019 by Finnish label Inverse Records. Don`t miss it out!
