Wolves Den
Deus Vault
Independent
The band was formed in Munich/Germany in 2014 and I think this is so exciting that so young bands are able to surprise me by quality, maturity and great musicianship just after few months of being together as a band. Market date for this album was 2015 and on, so it`s about one year after this pack of hungry wolves sniffed the blood and hunting begun. In a world where metal audience has certain demands I would say this album fulfill some expectations but as a debut itself is even better.
A cover to the album with impaled victims on a battlefield always drive my mind to Dracula`s bloodthirsty carnage and I do not know if it is rather Death itself standing in front but creepiness of this vision is terrifying. Some attention goes to Lisa Schubert for painting such disturbing work.
A vocalist of the band has very similar ability to express his insight like Satyricon`s Satyr and Helge efforts are really spectacular here. Lyrics in German for most time, so I am lucky to focus more on music and how good it goes for me eventually.
Deus Vault is a symphonic black metal but is not overrun by keyboards like in cases of many other bands from the genre. WD doesn’t need to spread it on big scale! They are not cheesy. Their superiority lies in unbelievable melodic guitars that create amazing harmonies, literally on entire album. They do not waste any moment to get me bored and whole lot of those evil-sweet sounding passages are like kiss of the vampire and drinking the fresh blood of the mortals. At least that what legends say, right? Keyboards are much more monumental, medieval, used only when needed, not for sake of doing so. Wolves Den know how to make their modern sound be on favor of selectivity of the instruments and they made it work very well for them. I am really a sucker for brilliant chorus they have composed in S/T song for example. Another fantastic, occult like element in their music perfectly flash backs some memories of Dark Ages and its cruelty and that`s all caused by convenience and simplicity of the music.
This is kind of slow burn album. I am finding new elements if I have missed any before and I start playing Deus Vault over and over again to enjoy black metal as its best . I like that a lot. For me, certain releases have that necessity of being discovered from time to time and I never have enough of Wolves Den for sure.
