Wintarnaht
Hriuwa
Talheim Records
When Wintarnaht plays fast black metal, there are whether some melodies going on or just harsh black metal music, which is a way where I find a nice balance for myself in songs of this Austrian band. When Wintarnaht slows down a pace of music and play some doomy/black metal, there are usually many, well performed pagan chants that give the album naturalistic flavour. I do not want to write Viking metal regarding album like Hriuwa, because the record has songs in Old German language, which just give you the idea of how this album sounds for most time...So, the music has a balance between more forward black metal and pagan metal in some tracks like Hriuwa, or in Urlagfrôwa, which also has some mid tempo doomy/pagan tunes therein. The third, atmospheric track that also has all these elements is Bez Hraban Swarzi Trahanûn. Here, you get another dose of those very well performed chants by Grimwald and excellent guitar groove. A though that pops up when I think about these 3 tracks – it`s a Bathory, epic-times style (to some degree) pagan metal mixed with traditional black metal, and these tracks are highlights of the album – for delivering musical diversity within black metal genre.
Song Be Hreôgot is just fast black metal and there is interesting sequence with acoustic guitar and blast beats played simultaneously, which sounds quite original. Shrieking vocals and screams, and singing happen here too.
Gloomy black metal with fast drumming and few heavier fragments is Sîn þiu Erþa.
Harsh black metal with some fast guitar shreds, heavier sounds, and many musical ideas for keyboards, it is in the song called Firhazzêt Truhtîn.
Baz tuncel Grabahûfo is atmospheric, instrumental track. I thought maybe Wintarnaht will build up to something more here, but the song just ends too quickly...
An example of classic, Norwegian style black metal is grim and aggressive song Îr in Flamma.
Runagaltar is just ambient song with vocals that just shows that Wintarnaht has tried to write a bit of everything from black metal genre to make a difference in songs, which he succeeded.
Those epic pagan metal tunes blended with black metal are definitely my favourite songs (1, 2, 5...) of Hriuwa. I think the album should be done more consistently written toward this direction, although other songs are not bad at all!
