Widdlywah
Desolate
Independent
I would like to write a few words about prog metal band from the US and it could be nothing unusual but fact this project is run by one talented multi instrumentalist and I already have a crush on his music, leaves me no choice... Let`s introduce you to Matt and his great band Widdlywah. I do not know if it`s debut album but 33 minutes and 7 songs in total, that`s pretty much full length for me.
Progressiveness opens wide spectrum of possibilities for music, of course. To build sort of picture of how Widdlywah cares of things I would say it`s progressive power metal with elements of prog&technical death metal and rock&heavy metal as well. There is a nice touch of jazz, especially in some drum parts and this album has no limits of creativity. Desolete has lots of guitar passages that draw landscapes in your mind if you can imagine yours. It`s like solo Jeff Loomis meets solo Chuck Schuldiner meets Widdlywah and average of those influences are closed in this album . Drumming and mastery of bass&guitars are stunning and every moment I sacrifice for hearing those great, intense harmonies and solos are worth a long while. And for your knowledge, this CD is instrumental. Yes, you right! There are no vocals here at all and there is just one guest appearance on drums by other musician. It`s just says simple fact that this band is worth to be involved in.
I may not hear much one man projects but I am pretty sure that Widdlywah is most advanced technically to date. Maturity of songs is very pleasant and I am attracted to artistry and superb dynamics of the music very much. Also what impressed me the most is extraordinary production and mastering that makes me enjoy each and every instrument as it was played right next to me. It`s kind of semi-professional record but outcome is aesthetic and this CD could never sounds better under circumstances. Matt took his big time to make this CD treated as first ever born child should be treated and I can tell you he has succeed and prevailed in every detail here.
While listening to the music of Widdlywah I have learnt that there is no more speak about one man bands like in category of imperfection. You know, all those doubts that only one person has to handle everything and it never could be that good is often true... But not this time! This band is as perfect as one musician can be and Matt balancing his ideas beyond my expectations, dealing with all instruments so smoothly. I do not think it should ever go better than normal 3-5 members bands do, otherwise everyone would only set single projects as priority. That`s not a point. And this is not a courtesy from me when I say that you can`t miss all those amazing Widdlywah tunes to believe that one man bands can bring a wave of enthusiasm and contentment just like Widdlywah does to me.
