Varulv
Sagenlieder
Talheim Records
I watched a video for the single song Knochenkult. There are short moments in this track that I like to call a guitar swarm (a short dissonances), cold guitar riffs are instantly present there, and very much on the entire album . You can hear some guitar harmonies also, which all build a winter aura around this album, because a guitar pitch they chose for their songs is just so piercing cold, and this muffled sound for kick drum is just so black metal.
There is some incredible guitar groove from time to time in music of Varulv - catchier in track Der Teufel Nahm Sich Eine Dirn, where they play it in between faster fragments.
Besides that, middle tempos meets faster ones in music of Varulv, the most frequently. Album has usually conrete black metal guitar shreds, because there is only one band member who tracked down all guitars, so, there is perhaps a lack of memorable guitar leads in songs. Musical ideas on the album do sound pretty simplistic then. There are not too many hooks on the album, but riffs from the band are as cold as snow in harshest winter times. There are slightly atmospheric moments in music as well, just like in song Der Wassermann, where the best for me, are those longer guitar passages. Slower and grimier is a track called Die Trud, the “swarming” guitars in the beginning sound great, and the rest of the song sound pretty atmospheric too - and it`s just drums, guitar sound and raspy black metal vocals, no ongoing effects. Heavier and faster track is Vom Schwarzen Flößer. Punky guitar riffs blend with storming shreds in Festmahl Der Hobagoaß. A short, lame guitar solo here seems like a bonus, because this band rarely does it. Im Graben is more in style of band like Immortal...
First impression is usually best. So, the album draws from Scandinavian sound a lot, the difference is that Varulv`s black metal is harsher when comes to music itself, bands from Scandinavia seem to play more melodic. Sagenlieder is not much diverse record, you just know what kind of black metal you are listenenin from start to end, which quite frankly is okey with me. Songs have fine production quality and of course, pure black metal music which is infested in every tune of this record, with elements of pagan-ritualistic themes (based on what I saw when watching the mentioned video clip).
My best tracks: 1,5,6,7
