Trollskogen
Die Weisheit des Einsiedlers
Talheim Records
Fourth studio album from Trollskogen was recorded by duo: F. A. on drums and S.M. - vocals, guitars, bass. S,M. is also a member of Arctic Sea Survivors (Talheim Records) among other bands.
Aside from a very few faster moments, this is a medium tempo album, or in other words, of doom metal pace. Music has a bit of musical sorrow and melancholy known from doom metal genre, a guitar leads sound almost melodic but not like all the way melodic, you can hear just glimpses of it in songs ( I think mostly in track Sieben Pfade zur ewigen Leere). Die Weisheit des Einsiedlers is however a black metal album. Songs have certain patterns that band had followed in order to write their music. First of all, tracks are based on 2-4 riffs (music is nicely composed between rhythm and lead guitars without a rush). They repeat those musical patterns in songs for a long time and add some minor changes to guitar play while a drummer plays his basic, monotonic (in positive meaning of the world) drumming patterns along. Very good examples of such repeatable music approach by Trollskogen are songs Das unsterbliche Elixier or Ein neuer Mond am Horizont, but surely there`s more songs like these ones... The album is build on simple music ideas that have an impact on a listener, or even the way the band plays songs (slow burn), force you to quickly learn their music. Trollskogen are just two musicians but for instant, S.M. plays bass as good as on 6 strings guitar, a drummer performs his parts with proper comprehension of the music so he can fits into rhythm section of Trollskogen just right. I like drums production on this album. Harsh vocals sound more in style of black/doom metal with depth and atmospheric emphasis.
It was hard to choose but I finally picked up Die Säulen des Himmels as my favourite song of the album that consist of best guitar riffs in my opinion, which starts off at 1.02 mins in this track... I also recommend a slower song Die Stille der Erde, for a couple of minutes guitar groove here is so dense that it takes over all other surroundings that you might have around you.
Find an hour of your free time to dive into this atmospheric, very well produced black metal album.
