Trauma
Ominous Black
Selfmadegod Records
Trauma, a living legend of European death metal is back with their new album. I checked the band`s line-up and it`s really hard to believe that there are still 2* members from that old Thanatos band that later initiated Trauma. So, Ominous Black was recorded by Jaroslaw Misterkiewicz - guitars, samples, backing vocals, who also laid down bass tracks on the record. Vocals were done by Artur Chudewniak and Arkadiusz Sinica played drums. Album was recorded in 2018 at Traumatic Sound Studio, mixed and mastered at Hertz studio in 2018-2019.
My first impression after hearing new songs is that, it`s Trauma`s death metal album in style I have been always liked and knew from their past. They may have had their older albums sound a bit overproduced sometimes but Ominous Black is not. A concrete, brutal sound of this record delivers technical and blistering guitar riffs and songs that demand from you a simple act of sitting down on your favourite chair and enjoy the band's composing ability that spreads sophisticated and sonical destruction as Trauma always does.
And here I have Inside The Devils Heart and Insanity Of Holiness which are both fast death metal
songs that merge progressive guitar moments with slower fragments that involve melodic, instrumental structures..
Heavier track is Astral Misantrophy with ground-breaking guitar rhythm and bass play techniques similar to Alex Webster. I never thought I would compare Trauma to Cannibal Corpse, but in this case, they play a bit like that.
Next track has incredible intensity and great growls from the vocalist who at the apogee of the song will be your “...Soul Devourer...”
A bit of experimentations with guitar textures, samples and more progressive death metal is happening in Among The Lies. This song testifies to Trauma's abilities to create an unearthly sounding music universes by perfect execution of their music ideas.
I am Universe is another intelligently performed track by Trauma with always incredible guitar shreds and groove which also involve few atmospheric moments in song.
Trauma always tries to find that balance between aggression, brutality, heaviness, speed and melodies. If you add musicianship to the equations which Trauma has lifted to their possibly highest of levels, then you get a song like The Black Maggots.
For me, The Godless Abyss is that death metal track in which thrash metal riffage ignite the fire to band`s sound.
Colossus starts off a bit like the beginning of the album. Brutal, technical death metal meets progressive metal with more harmonies added to complexity of song.
What`s more... Solid vocals, drumming at every pace and guitar solos that do not sound much death metal are surely quality feature to their death metal songs.
It`s basically Trauma`s album that I wanted to hear. So, there are no disappointments, no fillers in music. They have been perfecting their music style that is really hard to perfect any more since the first album but they still try to do it which is really, really great. It`s rather demanding but exciting death metal album that is mandatory to hear.
