Trauma
Acrimony
Selfmadegod Records
Every few years, between albums, Trauma releases an EP, to cool down expectations (at least mine) for the next full album. Certainly my favorite Trauma`s EP is Daimonion from 1998, but the newest one entitled Acrimony, is a tasty piece of death metal!
Acrimony was recorded in the band's studio called Traumatic Sound Studio. The production of the EP will surely not disappoint any fans of Trauma.
The release consists of their 3 original songs, and a cover of Dutch Gorefest "Reality When You Die", which is their classic, old school death metal track– certainly, it`s one of their best songs in their career. Trauma handled their version of the song brilliantly, by giving music the sound and character of Trauma as they are in 2021.
Lineup for this release is: Artur „Chudy” Chudewniak – vocals, Jarosław „Mister” Misterkiewicz – all guitars and bass, samples, backing vocals and Arkadiusz „Mały” Sinica – drums. As you can see, Trauma still has no regular bassist, so all the duties were taken by “Mister” who recorded bass tracks for “Acrimony”.
The EP starts off with samples, and moment later, it`s already slower death metal with a hint of progressive metal in their music – track Internal Sacrifice. The song is pretty heavy, with a slightly dissonant guitar track along rhythmic guitar. From time to time you can hear unsettling bell tolls in the background...
The Godless Abyss is a song that combines modern death metal (guitar break downs and intense shreds while using different distortions in layered guitar tracks) with old school death metal (faster fragments in music).
After hearing these 2 songs, it is noticeable that Trauma plays less technically in Acrimony, a bit slower and heavier, they have given more time for guitar harmonies, and I like this difference they have made.
Track Reign Of Terror, opens with calmer instrumental introduction, and then starts with death metal and a bit black metal (fire-spreading, high pitched guitar lead sounds fantastic and is really hard to miss). The song also has some thrash metal riffs, some chunky guitar rhythms that remind me era of Comedy Is Over album. Guitar solos sound top notch on the whole album (combination of melodic and aggressive stuff- flawless guitar play), and it`s not necessarily a typical death metal approach.
Vocals in Trauma did not change a bit (who says it should...), all growls are in right spot and sound brutal. Drumming in Trauma have always been great, and this time is even better, because there are more drum techniques in music, less blast beats than usual.
As you would expect from death metal - especially from Trauma, Acrimony is brutal-some and melodic-some musical material, performed by skilled musicians. Their songs really stand out among other death metal releases of this year.
