The King
Race Above The Sky
Capricornus Records
How I like to review such albums! The band seems totally unknown, they probably have recorded those songs for themselves and a few friends but they deserve more people to hear it. This is Polish band and I am not sure of the background of the musicians but it is certainly not just metal that those 3 guys like to explore by playing music. The album has 9 songs of progressive rock/metal/jazz and they center their sound between all these genres. It`s surprising how selective and solid is the production and mixes of every instrument and I like the professional approach of The King for their music that showcase them as talented and skilled band. Peculiar sound of the album really helps to enjoy it all!
Their music requires a certain amount of experience in listening to this type of recordings if progressive music is not your everyday thing. I ensure you that their music world is perfectly balanced and can give you a taste of artistic approach as well. I feel encouraged and more involved in listening to this album because each and every track is a journey through amazingly arranged and executed music labyrinth. Basically, with every minute they are getting me more excited and curious of what is to come...
I had no high expectations to this band at first but holy moly, with speed of light, they quickly made me love this album. It`s probably because Race Above The Sky has the songs that makes you think, tease with you, brain exercising you...It`s because the songs have guitar complexity and incredible bass-drums rhythmic section. The songs are superbly structured. The King is experimenting between technical and progressive music, almost giving you a taste of avant-garde and extravagance. What`s also important, the songs are not that difficult to assimilate to. It`s just like you suppose to make a great record, without knowing you actually did it!
In a couple of songs they actually used vocals for very short time but the album is definitely instrumental oriented. They obviously did not have 100% dedicated singer to do job for The King on full terms. Except for the song Battle, other vocals do not sound as great as anything else in this record which is the only minor discomfort I have when I listen to this album.
I think Race Above The Sky is pretty original record that sounds amazing, genuine, songs are demanding. I would say The King has slight influences from Cynic, Rush, Dream Theater, Riverside but with breathtaking and suspenseful jazz fragments as in track 4. Do not confuse them with one particular genre - they are just something better evolved!
The album has been released in 2017 but it`s one on the best records I have heard in 2018 without shadow of a doubt.
Favorite songs: All!
