Stormhaven
Exodus
Independent
I like albums divided into chapters which refer to opening song called Exodus that consist 3 subtracks, connected to the story. That`s often the omen of concept albums and I think Exodus lyrically meets this category, at least in Exodus trilogy part of the album. Shortly, Stormhaven tells about journey that happens beyond our world. Also about time and space travels and spiritual experiences of mind.
A music base to that story is peculiar, strange and very absorbing. The vibe of the album is sci-fi but also empiric, thanks to really good keyboard parts they use in this album. However the real beauty of Exodus comes with complexity of all guitars and genuine structures they blend in each and every song. It`s death metal album first but forget brutal side of it... Of course, they mostly have death metal vocals but do not let it mislead you too much. This is progressive metal, a bridge between Dream Theater and perhaps the bands like Gojira, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Nocturnus. The arrangements of all songs are literally hyper-dynamic and super detailed in drumming and especially in guitars and bass. To your choice, Exodus has atmospheric sequences, technical-progressive passages. They have quite a few out of ordinary moments which are mesmerizing when paid proper attention to. I also find melodic tunes captivating with clear vocals but they play lot of brainy and super sophisticated riffs along. This is album when best idea is to take your time and discover its elements gradually and enjoy it differently with every play. The songs are quite long, so prepare yourself for anything but greatness of celestial metal maze of sound and music.
I have to tell you that I am constantly on this album. It is not easy one. I think I know it well already but there is certain magnetism in their music that forces me to re-listen Exodus over again. I know it`s good and I won`t let it go in next few weeks because quite frankly, Stormhaven is becoming a very special band for me.
