Sinister Downfall
A Dark Shining Light
Funere / Weird Truth Productions
Sinister Downfall (Ger) is Eugen Kohl (all instruments), and Dark Shining Light is his second album.
The songs on the album are approximately 10 minutes long. So it's the record having a slow, funeral pace. The sombre atmosphere of the music is build on super heavy sounding guitar, deepened by the tracks of the second guitar which brings to music sadness, melancholy that reflect greyness of the world and dark side of human nature. These mixed emotions have nothing to do with happiness.
The monotonous beats on drums are like the signs of a dying heart at the end of existence. Band`s musical vision are sounds of sorrow and pain, therefore music is more terrifying when all instruments together crush you by its sound. The songs on this album have classic doom metal depth and heaviness, not like Candlemass, more like Winter or similar bands...
The vocalist's deep death metal growls are like a call from a deep grave. The album is slow as a pace of the caravan, and songs are certainly very dense. The musical ideas played on the keyboards are very simple, which is what lighting a bit this devouring all, sadness and sorrow in music of the band. Those moments that sound more like a piano, trigger the rest of emotions out of this album, but even then, it seems that this melancholy slowly fades away, replaced by bitterness of music.
The album at places sounds that there still might be a glimpse of hope, of something alive in sound of the band. And I mean that, in some guitar leads or in sound of keyboards, there are those negative emotions going on that this album explores. My point is that negativity can also be creative, just as Sinister Downfall made it up musically on this record.
A Dark Shining Light has a feel of doom metal but sound wise, it`s more death metal. Songs of the band has this kind of sad melancholy getting into your senses, so you may stuck in this world of dark shadows, not even seeing a guiding light of life for the last time... But you know, it is why I want listening to doom metal music, and dive into its mysteries.
Perhaps A Dark Shining Light sounds a bit too monotonous due to the similar pace of the songs, but I still think it's a good album, from which you may want to play a fragment of music, on your own funeral.
