Shrapnel Storm
Shrapnel Storm
Great Dane Records
Shrapnel Storm (Fin) signed to Great Dane Records (Fra) and you do not need to think of reason why because the most obvious answer is old school death metal. It`s second album from Shrapnel Storm, debut record Mother War was out in 2015.
I quickly got hooked to new songs of this band. They play and sound death metal but songs from the band are finest spawns of the genre. Tracks have melodic death metal riffs, groove ala Bolt Thrower which empowers their musical destruction. They play some speedy guitar riffs of almost heavy metal vitality - of course, it sounds just more brutal and aggressive overall. Album is full of smoothly played guitar shreds – essential quality of their music, which they interwove with heavy guitar chords and melodic guitar solos. This combination from the band sounds very energetic. You can hear catchy riffs from time to time which are based on solid, old school foundations, inspired from Scandinavian and British death metal. Songs also feature grounding vocals and very solid drumming (they do not play blast beats). The album does not sound raw or obscure which is usually what I think when read about old school death metal as description of music. I think production of the album is balanced between thrash metal to bring clarity to the music and death metal to deliver controlled brutality of sound. Music-wise, their melodic death metal ala Carcass/Arch Enemy meets classic death metal, leaning toward clean and modern sound as well - just not too much.
There is sort of easiness and maturity in music of Shrapnel Storm that seems very natural to them, in terms of writing very good music without pushing it too hard. It`s one of better records of 2020 that I have heard this year, really, all songs remain great on this album.
