Shadecrown
Riven
Inverse Records
Riven is an atmospheric metal album. Groovy tracks are Not Until The End, Divided...In songs Lifelong Dying, Hate Reflected the band planted melodic guitar riffs that are characteristic for 90`s era with heavy death/doom rhythm section. The only brutal sounding factor of their music is growling vocal but there are also some vocals that just sound melodic to some degree. Shadecrown sometimes creates dreamy music passages. They use keyboards to share the feelings of melancholy and a bit of sorrow but I do not get impression that their music is sad as it is often in other doom metal bands. Those atmospheric moments sound more like a metal soundtrack to the autumn time. If you live in Europe, you may know a feeling of autumn`s nostalgia and how it fits to doom metal songs which are just as good as on this album.
Rain’s Edge is once dynamic track, moment later the band plays slower and melodic, drummer plays nice accents on drums or cymbals. Another pretty heavy track is The Ghost I Mourn with calmer moments, guitar and keyboard soundscapes. Incomplete is rock-metal song, like post death metal era of Anathema but with harsh vocals. Half of the track is slow, atmospheric, the other half is dynamic. As in almost every song of theirs, there is a fine amount of melo-heavy riffs or guitar solos.
The album is mid-paced, the sound and album production is good, with a room to improve.
If you like combination of 90`s doom/death with some modern take, Riven has all those music elements in.
