Rotengeist
The Test That Divide Us All
Defense Records
It is third album of Rotengeist but in fact, first one I am able to hear from them. So, as the band is completely new for me I will refer only to this album and I am not going to do any recollection of their past releases, simply; I do not know any of them. Their name has appeared virtually to my eyes by few occasions but it never was any turning point that triggers to play actual music until now.
The album consist 8 songs and have average, selective sound which safely corresponding with thrash metal roots of the band. But it is not Metallica, Kreator type of thrash for sure. Their riffs are weirder and sometimes drive you nuts but they try to keep dose of melody in music so they do not loop themselves in senseless of chaos. There is a bit of death metal stuff going on here, also on vocals but they are rather closer to Cavalera Conspiracy sense of brutality and perhaps second full length of Geisha Goner (hell Yeah!)
Once I heard the album I knew that Butcher`s Bill (guitar appearance from Pajak-Esquarial, Vader) and Nightmare Within Nightmare will become my favourite songs. First one because of interesting instrumental introduction to the album, rhythmic patterns yet aggressive thrash that going after and diverse vocals that comes along. The second is very concrete thrash with catchy riffs that pop up at refrain part. To my surprise they have some stoner twist to it which is a second guitar motive of the song that is present again at the end and it is really highlight of this track and maybe the album. Moments Of The Ecstasies still keeps album on good level and I do not think about other bands which means they continue on playing their good stuff... Until a song Pray, Hate...Fight that in most parts sounds to me like thrash version of Unleashed which of course could be a compliment but unnecessary advantage of the band, if you mind that Rotengeist is not strictly death metal band. Lunatics Fanatics is fine song and is more in vibe of Max Cavalera projects which I can hear in vocal manner and music, too. Next one-New Direction is once fast, the other time heavy but lacks of moments worth to remember. I assume that next one called Gest Idoli must be a punk cover of some other band because it is track so different than any other on The Test That Divide Us All. And number 8, S/T track is like they wanted to filter all anger they have left in the band and play the most relentless song which they possibly did.
Everybody has influences and so has Rotengeist. As a result they made a good, decent album.
