Relinquished
Addictivities (Part I.)
NRT Records
Addictivities (Part I.), a third full length from Austrian band Relinquished. It`s a concept album which deals with issues of drug-addicted person. Also, it`s a prequel story to their album Susanna Lies In Ashes (2011).
Relinquished is the band that don`t make it easy to listen to their music. Their fuse of death and black metal is rather unexpected and the main reason for it are experimental elements in their songs. I have been listening to this album a number of days in a row but those weird guitar arrangements were so time-consuming to unravel them that, it took some effort from me to finally get along with their music.
Addictivities (Part I.) has many spoken and whispered (2-3 times sound like Dani from Cradle Of Filth) vocals. Majority of all other vocals are combination of rasp black metal with harsh death metal singing like in bands Canvas Black, Samael...
Even if Relinquished is not very straight with their music I have my favourite songs that should be mentioned here.
The first one is epic and melodic Expectations which combine post -black metal with death metal. Guitars are sometimes multi-layered so you need to focus, take it easy with their music, if you find it impossible at once. The Expectations is also very atmospheric track with nice soundscapes.
Bundle Of Nerves is a bit more progressive death metal track. Any time the music is getting calmer moments, I think of them as a psychedelic rock band as well.
Damaged For Good is more melodic death metal groove song but at the end of the track they went for little blast beats and more black metal sound which they like to use in their sound.
Syringe and Zero are another experimental (this word just fits them very well) death metal songs with many impressive guitar textures in. I should write tho, that Relinquished does not play technically that much, they are just more avantgarde the way they express it.
Void Of My Ashen Soul is one of those weird, slow burning song with some industrial music touch and ambience, but it`s actually another winner here.
It`s modern sounding album, the only doubt that I have is that they have lost too much of human factor in process of recoding it. The drums and guitars sound too mechanical and album production is cold, has no organic feeling to it when they hit the drums or pull the guitar strings. The use of synthesisers & electronics (Pulse), only intensify the impression. This album sounds like technology has triumphed and devoured over all, what is paradoxally a humanity`s weakness – which are deepest emotions (music wise, not lyrically).
It`s good album for now but I think it will be much better in coming months. I do not think this review could be any different in the future, I just need to I grow up to the expectations of this album.
