Refusal
Epitome Of Void
Great Dane Records
Epitome Of Void is a Finnish grind core with death metal influences and this combination on this album has its good taste. Grind core is a genre which usually takes an angle on punk music when comes to composing songs, which they have... However, Refusal songs are more technical than average grind core album, which in my mind make them much closer to death metal. Of course, the album has blast beats, which is very grind core thing, they just do not do play it all the time. They definitely have songs that have some grind core chaos and immense guitar intensity but I actually think that this album has more compositional value... Epitome Of Void is more aesthetic than other noisy (bad) grind core albums to which Epitome Of Void does not belong in my opinion. The whole album has songs that are more sophisticated and surprising throughout. It just happens that there is a lot of music diversity in their tracks and for my ears - obviously, the band made a huge effort to kill boring side of music. Their tracks bring sonic devastation, which are desired results of brutal and violent grind core songs - very well arranged by Refusal for most of the time.
There are few tracks that involve some minor complexity in music structure (,6,7,8(!!)), which I like in Refusal, same as in a band Antigama. In some tracks they wave so much straight brutality (1,2) that it`s hard not to mention about Napalm Death, as a comparison to this band . Songs with number 3,5, on the other hand are groovy with its heavy riffs, so it`s not just fast album to your knowledge. If you like it medium-fast within one song, you may find tracks 4,7,9(!) very useful. There are lot of shredding and some technical music ideas to drums and guitars in songs but also they play opposite to it. The album is paced good anyway, which kind opens the doorway to quality and flexibility of the band`s music.
Singing is a mix of aggressive-guttural- growls which these vocals are sometimes double-tracked by the band, at the same time.
I think the best way to put it, is that this album makes me feel very OK... It`s modern sounding record, it has brutal but demanding songs, and Refusal compiles grind core and death metal splendidly, which is on the high level yet.
Tracklist:
1 Suffocate
2 Hectic
3 Disregard
4 Disgust
5 Slaves
6 Exploit
7 Bound
8 Futile
9 Void
