Psychonaut 4 / Nocturnal Depression

Split album of two black metal bands that music-wise differ from each other quite a bit. A thing to mention is that both bands have covered each other songs from their discographies. Psychonaut 4 from Georgia made their version of Her Ghost Haunts These Walls song, from 2008 album Reflections Of A Sad Soul, originally written by Nocturnal Depression. Last track of the album, entitled Bad T.RIP from 2016 Neurasthenia album by Psychonaut 4 was covered by French Nocturnal Depression. Both cover songs sound pretty fresh in their new black metal versions.
It`s kind of retrospective album also. Track Self-Multilation by French black metallers is already known from 2005 demo tape Fuck Off Parisian Black Metal Scene and in my opinion it`s their best song on this particular release – grim, shrieking as hell vocals from the singer sound like he is 100% and more into it, and overall feeling of desolation and hopelessness are pretty much in traditional style of black metal in which Nocturnal Depression can sound very intense and depressive the way they play it. Suicidal and disturbing lyrics may not make it easier for you self-being, but anyway, Self-Multilation is a very good black metal song...
“Cut yourself...
...Just Straight Your Arm And Let The Blade Embrance Your Veins...
Song Born In A Padded Cell is not repetitive in comparison to previous one, sound like a decent black metal where singer tears it up with enormous devotion, like he had no mercy for himself while shredding his vocal chords to pieces.
All 3 Nocturnal Depression songs for this album were recorded from 2017 to 2018.
I`m pretty sure that Psychonaut 4 are more in my cup of tea. I like mix of avant-garde, post metal, black metal style just better. There are very well performed vocals in those 3 songs. They sing words as if they live through it, as if they wanted to be their music be as much alive as possible, but not leaving harsher black metal vocal behind –song His Right To Remain Silent. You shall hear many emotional and atmospheric pieces in their music not only vocally but instrumentally as well. Other features of the album are clean vocals (melodic ones sound like it`s next level for the band), dreamy, eerie guitar leads groove and some harmonies sound really good, progressive rock guitar passages give music more dimension, open new door for song writing... Solos in the music do not feel like it`s there for sake of just doing them, but like something that had to be there to complete music integrity of Psychonaut 4 to their finest. It`s a bit like Devin Townsend avant-garde meets spectrum of black metal music expressions with Pink Floyd`dian surrealism. Their song #питьитанцевать just sounds fantastic and I think Psychonaut 4 from Georgia is a serious deal for followers of more ambitious, artistic black metal scene. Very good split album from both bands, check it out.
