Psychomancer/Pitchfork
Split CD
Rectal Thermometer Records
Psychomancer is a returning band to our pages and I would all other bands previously associated with our magazine to come back any time as it means a lot for us same as for bands to keep in touch and writing about actual facts and music that should reach out metal maniacs everywhere possible.
I made a quick play of Psychomancer`s older CD (click here for that review) to get into mood and realm of the band. Just right after that, a 4 new songs from this split CD exploded out of my speakers and I can tell you now... They still keep their level of brutality and destroy everything in radius of my decibel`s hi-fi. The way their death metal is trying to bite YOU so you could become their zombie-slave(aarrrrgghhh) is marvellous and based on awesome, traditional riffs that bands like Psychomancer can still create for all of us. Most songs have incredible leading motives that are simple but idea driving them is wise and keep my attention to the band constantly. They are surprisingly good in mixing melo-brutal-splatter stuff with some gruesome and sort of tormented lyrics like;
...smashing skull with bones...
...punishing for that you have done and skinned alive...
...My body is a road map of pain...
Psychomancer is an amazing old school death metal band and with songs like Castigator, Necroplasmic Inoculation, Faded Scars Return To Bleed they keep me in certitude that metal no matter what is still as good as in the beginning. Killer tracks.
Second band on the split is Pitchfork and both bands have pretty common fact which is Bang studio where this CD has been recorded &mastered by John Hehman for each band. That`s hilarious to think how conditions of certain places, where records are being made, has influence on bands and make them sound familiar. Pitchfork is not that far away from Psychomancer`s death metal and also is not that good at the same time. Difference mainly lies in vocals. Pitchfork has more screaming vocalist, a bit guttural, rather than growl but I am not impressed by it at all. Guitars are motor-intense with proper heaviness which death metal requires but it`s off some tension moments that I could remember for longer. I haven`t been amazed by this band so much but it is still death metal that you may appreciate more than I did. In fact I like 1 song out of 3 and lyrical subject of that one is an infamous Russian Gulag and its atrocities that had there a place in time of crimes against humanity. Not likely Polish thing but happened.
Decent death metal overall and yet, a lot of work to do in order to write some alternatively better songs for Pitchfork.
