Monumentum Damnati
In The Tomb Of A Forgotten King
GrimmDistribution / The End Of Time Records / More Hate Productions
In The Tomb Of A Forgotten King is a mystical journey through depths of doom and death metal sound. Once you hear monumental growls from a vocalist, his whispers and very heavy band`s rhythm section, you realize that you are entering into dominion of a very subtle melodies and crushing guitar riffs. . This album is only slow or played at middle tempos but songs consist of a many instrumental layers that spark out some magical moments in music. Tracks in songs have some beautiful guitar harmonies and melodic leads, or there is something in music that is very lonely and doomy. A keyboardist tries to give different sounds to his instrument to reach for wider spectrum of emotions in music. It`s really nice to hear sombre, melancholic and melodic piano-like arrangements, a few mini-orchestration passages sound very fresh too. What else is there are powerful organs, or that almost constant vastness of the universe that you can often hear in the background of songs. Because of its keyboards, the album musical ideas are mysteriously engaging and diverse, for me as a listener. Spacy guitar solos and groove give their songs emotional balance and fantasy feel – some drama, some bombastic elation and spirituality, some light bizarreness, it is a bit like when watching a good adventure movie with magic. Doom and death metal sound of songs is merged with quieter guitars (more like alternative doom rock). Even if the band sounds brutally heavy, delightful guitars and keyboard melodies of many shades, carry the spirit of songs. It is still the album that sound raw and very underground, which is okey, but you already can get this sensation from them, that they are almost one step closer, from making the music sound big.
I have had great time listening to this atmospheric, In The Tomb Of A Forgotten King album. By falling deeper and deeper into depths of this album, I detached myself from the real world, it felt for me as natural as breathing the air.
