Molde
The Messenger
Satanath Records/The Ritual Productions
The album is constructed of 3 types of songs. First are raw and fast black metal tracks like Backed By The Reckoning and Call Of The Ancient which also capture some atmospheric moments played on guitars at mid-tempo. Second types are crafty songs where 2 guitar tracks were laid down independently to each other at some points - Ollie is playing different guitar ideas simultaneously in certain tracks which have a strong feeling of music unity. Good example is The Second Coming ... Third types are both slow and fast songs; Into The Winter Moon, Leaving The Mortal Realm which all combine grim and groove black metal guitars in style of Scandinavian metal. Actually the sound of the whole album is oriented in this way. There is also incredible instrumental song called The Ancestral Isles which is a mix of black and progressive metal. Quite frankly, I did not expect to hear it from Molde, more from Enslaved, because the songs on the album didn't go that way until this song.
Tracks sporadically feature some melodies, just like in Until The Darkness Conceals Thee. So, black metal of this band has more music quality than many other typical black metal albums, although it's not flawless and it`s not the album that seeks extremity at all cost but craft.
Raspy and chaotic black metal vocals from Lord Darkstorm are essential for dark message that he brings with harsh sound of his vocal chords and lyrics in The Messenger. Lord Darkstorm is better known from his Polish black metal band Darkstorm. Here, he supports vocally Irish guy Ollie who plays all instruments on this album. This band of international status is based in Ireland where Molde was initially formed by Ollie around 2003.
