Leslie Ripp
Circle Of Fifths
Sliptrick Records
Leslie Ripp is American solo artist and multi-instrumentalist who composed music for this album by himself, which basically means that all songs have been performed by him in studio on guitars, drums & percussion instruments, piano and bass. Circle Of Fifths does not feature any vocals, so all my hearing senses have had to be touched by what music itself conveyed instrumentally, to sort of comprehend what those songs mean to me...
Track Fallen Angel starts off with piano, softer hard rock guitars and a lot of tight and fast soloing while keyboards throughout sound very celestial.
Periwinkle strikes you almost immediately by all over the place guitar solos, rhythms section and keyboard background are kind of second importance. The song quickly proves that this album is a very solo artist album - different guitar variations and keyboard instruments dominate in music and seem the strongest attributes of his author in creating the music.
There are just moments where rhythm guitar is on the first plan, it`s when music becomes more melodic and optimistic, but yet ,it`s not much happen in next song called Widow Maker where guitar solos almost go crazy on all channels, and nice jazzy piano tunes give it all a bit more diversity in the end.
Clash Of The Titans features crazy fast and very tight guitar solos with angelic keyboards somewhere in the background. It`s a bit hard to follow it all, music lacks space and more accessible song writing but let`s see what comes next...
No mercy for you all if you decide listen to the song Thunder Alley Jam. Soloing, soloing almost non-stop make your brains work at full capacity. I like when there is more rhythm guitar between it all, which just make this record easier to listen to and feeling of music is getting warmer...
Next is self titled track, which is melodic, much slower and a bit more bombastic tune. Music is more accessible for ordinary listeners, which I do not necessarily am and have to be, but often I like to be.
Highlights of Leslie Plays The Blues is Hammond organ keyboards, piano and generally song is very bluesy and more spacy, just as previous song. Solos at some points are crossover between southern rock/country, but in the end, this train goes crazy again with all those soloing...
Shanghai is in a style of first 2-3 tracks of the album, but pace of rhythm section is slower, beside solos that are very fastly played, just like many times before...
I think track Out From The Ashes is a third or fourth song of this record where I can breath and not get suffocated. Melodic rhythm section and leads feel much better in this track than constant cacophony of solos that rains out of the speakers like a heavy storm in other songs.
Some Like It Hot - not only this song, but the entire record has a vibe of 70`s hard rock that leans toward blues jazz and guitar virtuosos. This album is full of solos that sound like hard to solve equations. Easiness and flow that should come from listening to the music is left off too much behind. I mean, the album does not have much leading riffs driving the songs, something that I could easy to follow for a longer time and enjoy it. But this last track has that riff! Few other slower songs have it too – guitar or keyboard wise, so, the album definitely has its moments.
