Kira
Peccatum et Blasphemia
Ossuary Records
Kira members had or have been active in other Polish bands. Those more recognizable names are Nomad, Ethelyn or Calm Hatchery, among others.
Peccatum et Blasphemia is Kira`s sophomore album, and it is a big surprise of this year for me, because it`s an extreme metal album that consists of particularly infernal metal songs.
Scratchy growls vocals of Hellishdust on this record remind me shrieks of Pete Helmkamp of Angelcorpse, and track Lucifer's Herald has the vibe of their music too. Add Morbid Angel to the equation and there you have it right in the beginning - Peccatum et Blasphemia – your ticket to hell.
Only in song Weakness Isn't Breathless vocals sound differently than in other songs-more rough and death metal, less black metal. So, if you want to enter to the realm of this album, you need to hear this and more that is coming...For instance, the most of guitar solos here sound totally possessed – particularly in tracks Lucifer's Herald and Lord of Hallucinations – those are very Vader/Betrayer style ripping solos that give you that raw, devilish, old school death metal vibe that Kira creates in their music. Guitarists for this album are Cannibal and Nameless, a bassist`s name is Peter, their guitar play and sound of instruments are no escape - once you got into their songs, there is no turning back.
Album has interesting guitar layers - they approached it originally in Lord of Hallucinations where extreme death metal riffs blend with atmospheric black metal passages. I think that the song called In the Devil's Embrace has its original - melo-grim character as well. Either way! - the music of Kira sounds like the Devil metal on fire. There are some dissonant guitar riffs that I like in music in general – you can listen to some “Norwegian” black metal dissonance in song Temple of Suffering, and another bleak guitar passages therein, and some marching drums, and the swarming guitar groove. Death metal leads in One Gram of Your Soul sound like dark, melodic Swedish death metal, just what it needs to bring some diversity to their songs. Faster, more brutal tracks are Necroscience that involve atmospheric guitar leads and heavier moments which riff-wise reminds me something of Morbid Angel from Gateways...and Heretic era. Also, check out The Fearful One, there is no really song on the album that weakens its strength.
Peccatum et Blasphemia is a controlled pandemonium of two musical styles. Cold black metal riffs rage in realm of death metal inferno. There are not really that many fast tracks on this record, extremity of music is also (and mainly) crafted and harmonized when the pace of songs is not fast.
As for me, the hellfire of the album are the riffs and very good song writing. Songs are in the vein of blackened death metal in which everlasting flames burns and burns...forever.
