KING (SVK)
New Æon
Sliptrick Records
The album is heavily inspired by Egyptian myths, gods, pyramids... And literature of Percy Shelby, Friedrich Nietzche, Lord Byron etc.
First tunes are immediate introduction to that world of sun and sand. A fact that the band used some growl vocals from Jozef (the only person in the band who sings in this style) does not make them a strict death metal band. Actually these vocals are the only death metal element in their music. Album is also dominated by singers from whom you can hear very melodic, clean vocals – both male and female. A good performance from Ervin (he performs only pure vocals) you can hear already in Ozymandis, while music is lightly version of progressive metal, particularly guitars. Hymnus Aton is really amazing song because of atypicaly sounding keyboards by King and incredible choruses – all melodic and very in vibe of Egyptian or so music. It`s not every day when I can hear a band that play so indifferent to other European or American bands. Most of keyboard programming and effects by Ivan sound unique and surely very original, especially in a first half of the album. Another keyboard-piece of his creative mind had been recorded in Chant Of Praise Of Nimaatre.
I have to admit that music ideas throughout the whole album are out of the box and King stays away from any comfort zones that could stuck the band in a creative stagnation. Seeking Of Being characterizes a dynamic range of guitar work and art rock keyboards in style of 70`s heavy/rock songs. Heavier track is Homeless where both vocalists challenge themselves by singing with harsh and clean vocals. Still, the music stays melodic, majority of guitars sound in style of progressive metal with a lot of shredding. Beside that, they play some power metal tunes too. Venetian Night is such song for sure but from this moment on, the band has changed a trajectory of music a bit by featuring female vocalist Gabi and Trio KKT. They sing in songs from 6 to 8 and at this point of the album King sounds little more symphonic, with more heavy-power metal guitars to sharp up the music and increase a pace. After Swimming reminds me a song like Witches Dance by Mercyful Fate. These are not bad tracks at all but I have to give my strong vote on songs from 1 to 5 as the best ones that happen to this album.
With Horus In The Sky is an aggressive, guitar driven song and so is The Age Of Aquarius - more technical guitar work and keyboard orchestrations.
New Æon is an easy going, melodic album, full of colours and bright music textures. King plays much more original songs than a bunch of other bands with many albums in their discographies that are unable or, concern of failure if they had made a change in their music. It`s not discomfort for the King, for this band, all music horizons are shine open for winning.
