Iscariota
Legenda
Defense Records
Silesia in Poland is the cradle of Polish thrash metal, it`s the region where heaven&hell have spawn a few iconic names that are long time known for majority of Polish metal fans: Kat, Dragon, Necrophobic, Prosecutor ...and it`s mandatory to mention Iscariota from Sosnowiec along them. Their 2 previous albums (Historia Życia and Upadłe Królestwo – both released by Defense Records) have proven that they deserve to carry the flag with Polish thrash/heavy metal emblem and to be successors of bands like Kat and Turbo. Although, I am aware that people may be hesitant to admit it, because they are too used to their musical tastes and habits from the past and an idea that nothing should change in hierarchy of their best albums or bands is hard to accept. I do not belong to them. I have to write that I like last few Iscariota records better than last Kat(s) releases and this is how legacy of metal from Silesia should continue, in my opinion...
Legenda, just like previous albums is sung in Polish, which gave their songs power of persuasion contained in bitter words regarding life existence or, they just may thrown your mind into places between dreams and reality where words in songs do not give you simple answers, but instead, you can find them within yourself. Legenda has a few songs that loosely relate to Kat's past by lyrical content (Międzyświat, Jestem Bogiem) or by the music itself (single riffs here and there), but it`s very okey, Iscariota knows their roots, and as experienced musicians as they are, they brought the best metal songs that they could came up with. Iscariota made sure that this album has selectiveness and modern sound while music is energetic and riffs are sharp as a sword`s blade of the samurai. There's a melodic heavy/thrash metal song about love - Nie Pytaj Mnie. Track Zachłanny Jak Wąż has heavy, thunderous riffs and very good guitar solos (just like you learn about it everywhere on the album). Couple of fast thrash metal songs with killer guitar shreds or groove sound precious to my ears - Nie Jestem Nikim Szczególnym, Międzyświat. These and few other tunes also have taken me to times of Kat from albums Bastard and Róże Miłości Najchętniej Przyjmują Się Na Grobach. A little magic has been captured in a heavy, but still metal ballad Lodowa Mgła.
Songs of Legenda bring an original blend of Silesia, German and Bay Area thrash that together sound pretty powerful, aggressive and melodic, although with plenty of nostalgia and bitterness in lyrics. My guess is that Lucifer in some of their songs has a name Lucjan ( a human name), by which you can say that Iscariota vocalist does not give you obvious meanings.
Iscariota plays catchy music from time to time, which I can regard to drumming on the album as well - for instance an opening sequence in song Nie Pytaj Mnie hits the high score. This album kick ass from start to finish, no matter if you catch them playing only fast or only heavy or groovy or when it all happen within one or more songs (Rodzinny Grób), I think that every track of Legenda feels different from each other, which make my listen of their music being highly enjoyable. They can thrash you up by sharp guitar riffs, next moment they heal you by playing more melodic tunes or those that sort of sound atmospheric - like in some vocal choruses or calm, instrumental fragments.
I admire what Iscariota did on this album, I am so into their music for last decade, so I am sure that I can write that, They are really up their game right now with their metal songs. I think that they play as good as Testament or Kreator or what have you...Perhaps they think about themselves as a band that they do not make an impact, but for me, Iscariota is there, at the top of a mountain of Polish thrash & heavy metal scene, they sound old school & new school, fresh and they counts.
