Now
Czar Of Crickets Productions
Inez is basically Ines Brodbeck (vocals/guitar/mandoline/violine). She grew up in Basel/Switzerland but her roots reaches out to Cuba which is where her father came from. It is not one person band and the line-up is extended to more musicians from whom you can hear few unusual instruments:
Gabriel Sullivan (vocals/guitar/mandoline/doublebass)
Ryan Alfred (bass/synth/winston watson drums)
Connor Gallaher (special guest - catfish guitar solo)
Craig Schumacher (special guest – harp)
I have to tell you that majority of reviews in our magazine are about metal but Inez is not a metal band at all. On the other hand, I strongly recommend this album to every metalhead because it could open new music horizons for you that you did not know exist. I find NOW album very difficult to classify to one specific genre but I`ll try to bring up my thoughts and let you know what I think about it.
Now is 10 songs CD but I only point out highlights which are particular songs that catch my attention. Before I`ll come to it, I have to tell you that technically, album sounds really good and was recorded in Tuscon, Arizona, in studio that belongs to one of the band`s member.
Hoy has a very good vocals - little mystical and instrumentally the band makes me feel like I was on a desert because the music is surrounded by some country music style which is unlikely European. As most of the songs of the album, this one is atmospheric, and has very interesting guitar solo. Hoy certainly awakens my interest to the band, in perspective to hear the rest of the album.
The song that particularly blew me away is Man From War (I also have seen a title Man From Far?). It has outstanding, catchy lead played on mandolin, if I am not mistaken. Percussion beats makes music more trance and I also like its simplicity. Overall character of the song is pretty dark in nature and they play it very strangely.
Buchblatter has something from 60-70`s pop, western saloon stage vibe (same as some other tracks but not all of them) with nice harp tunes. The song is kind of sad and nostalgic but music slowly breaks into my mind and finds its calm place in my head.
Example of very Latin American music is the song Verano. It`s sang in Spanish - various ways, and the track has very lively, energetic and folk instrumental approach where the main role plays mandolin. Most of vocals - to my surprise, are not meant to amaze a listener. The sound of wind that you can hear from time to time is not necessarily omen of friendly times in this song.
They bring together dark and light in track 9, which is another mystic-like song with blurry sounding instruments and little distortions, however, beautiful and melancholic vocal lines...
I like lyrics of the band, placed on border of real life and fantasy. The album sounds amazing, same as most music ideas of the band - from jazz, folk to pop... I do not measure all songs being on the same level (some I just like more, some less) but still, it`s incredibly good album that has its unique nostalgic charm that takes my imagination to another and better places.
