This Finnish black metal album is two types of songs. Some are ultra fast, the drummer` playing is relentless, almost like he wanted to break some of his drum kit. In songs like Otherwordly Embrace(!), The Hedonist Anthem and Anti-Human Agenda (Misanthropy Part I), you can hear grim guitar harmonies like there was some evil energy attached to the riffs. My favorite fast track is Better Tomorrow where the leading riff (I am glad they repeat it often throughout the track) sounds so freezing cold and majestic, like it`s one of those things for which people appreciate Scandinavian black metal. At the end of the song, a powerful sound of bells is like proclaiming the arrival of all evil in this very moment of the album. When the music is fast and extreme, these Finns are alike Marduk, only Hedonist sound is darker and dirtier, more underground...
The second type of songs on the album are tracks (Run You Scum, Pessimism Is The New Realism) where Hedonihil does not slow down the tempo of the music, but there are less blast beats on drums and more crafts from guitar players. Sometimes you can hear the keyboards that accelerate a bit atmosphere of songs, but this is definitely an album where drums, bass and guitars rule, for the glory of hell-storming black metal songs with vocal shrieks of a singer. I think that extremity of music is sometimes still more important than song-writing in Hedonihil, however I prefer them when they do not compromise this extremity because crafting is still - let`s say - in developing process in this band.
Another memorable song that balances the tempo of the music and diversifies it, is Temple Of Venus. A rhythm guitarist gave some original atmosphere to this song by harmonizing riffs a bit like Norwegian Immortal does and of course, be prepared, there will be no mercy for you when you hear them playing very fast again.
