Gurkkhas to nazwa zespołu, która jest mi znana jeszcze z końca lat 90-tych ubiegłego wieku. Jako ciekawostkę mogę dodać, że niektórzy członkowie Gurkkhas udzielali się także wcześniej w doskonałym, death/thrash metalowym zespole D.A.B. z Francji. Mam sporo dobrych wspomnień z muzyką tych grup, więc ucieszyła mnie wiadomość o re-edycji drugiego albumu Gurkkhas zatytułowanego A Life Of Suffering (2001) z kilkoma dodatkowymi piosenkami z ich pierwszego albumu Engraved In Blood, Flesh And Souls (2000). Jest to zatem, w jakimś sensie album kompilacyjny, przypominający o dokonaniach zespołu z początkowych lat obecnego millenium.
Recenzowana płyta niesie w sobie dziką i surową dawkę old schodowego death metalu. Gitarzyści grają dobrze technicznie, brutalnie, karkołomnie, czasami chaotycznie co przypomina mi dokonania Sinister, Deicide czy polskiego Betrayer. Struktury piosenek są zróżnicowane, zmieniające się, a częste doładowywania do muzyki coraz to nowych riffów stanowią o dość dużej kreatywności zespołu która nadaje ich muzyce sporą, death metalową moc. Muzyka jest generalnie szybka, agresywna i brutalna, ale uposażona w wyniszczającą, dziką energię w którą członkowie zespołu włożyli chyba całą swoją nienawiść i mrok, ponieważ muzyka na plycie jest wyniszczajaca jak erupcja wulkanu. Są też w piosenkach Gurkkhas momenty ciężkiej i wolniejszej pracy gitarzystów. W tych fragmentach, kilkakrotnie usłyszałem pewne wpływy Morbid Angel, ale zdecydowanie skłonny jestem dać tej płycie statut płyty raczej oryginalnej, z kilkoma wpływami od innych zespołów, które tylko uprzyjemniają jej odsłuchiwanie.
Jeszcze dwa istotne czynniki które stanowią o sile tej płyty. To doskonałe, miażdżące wokale, w których wokalista ryczy i growluje na wszystkich poziomach skali, od wysokich krzyków, po dokujące w piekle growle. Brzmi to zaiście piekielnie i niestrudzenie. Druga sprawa to nie ujarzmiona praca perkusisty który bije w biedny jakby ziemia miała się zaraz zapaść. Oczywiście praca guitar na tym albumie jest absolutnie jadowita i brutalna.
Dobrze było usłyszeć ten zespół ponownie, po tylu latach. Polecam płytę, bo zaiście jest ona jak aktywny, death metalowy wulkan!

Gurkkhas is the name of the band, which I know from the late 1990s. As an interesting fact, I can add that some members of Gurkkhas were also previously active in excellent death/thrash metal band D.A.B. from France. I have a lot of good memories about their music, so I was happy to hear about the re-release of Gurkkhas' second album titled A Life Of Suffering (2001) with a few additional songs from their first album Engraved In Blood, Flesh And Souls (2000). As you can assume, it`s a compilation album in a sense, reminding us of the band's achievements from the early years of this millennium.
The reviewed album contains a wild and raw dose of old-school death metal. The guitarists play technical, brutal,and chaotic parts, which reminds me the music of Sinister, Deicide and the Polish band Betrayer. The song structures are varied, changing quite often, and the frequent addition of new riffs to the music is a sign of the band's creativity, which gives their music, in your face, death metal power. The music is generally fast, aggressive and brutal, but endowed with a devastating and raw energy. Seems that band members probably channeled all their hatred and darkness into music, because the whole album sounds as devastating as volcanic eruption. There are also slower and heavy moments in Gurkkhas songs, where, quite a few times, I heard some Morbid Angel influences that tell you how important was M.A in those years for death metal in general. But, I am definitely inclined to consider this album as a rather original album, with just a few influences from other bands that only make it more pleasant to listen to.
Two more important factors that amplify the strength of this album are the excellent, crushing vocals in which the singer roars and growls at all levels of the vocal scale - from high-pitched guttural screams to hell-spreading growls. It sounds truly hellish and tireless. The second thing is the untamed work of the drummer who hits the drums so relentlessly as if the earth was about to collapse. Of course, the guitar work on this album is absolutely venomous and brutal and it`s more about human factor regarding their music that it is about studio tricks considering the sound, which is more organic on this CD than it is on many others, nowadays albums.
It was good to hear the band again, after many years. I definitely recommend for you this active death metal volcano, hell of the album!
