Grin
A Scanner Darkly + Promo 98
Deformeathing Production
A band was formed in 1996 and has ex or current members of Ghost, Yattering, Trauma, Blinded, so the bands you had to hear about at some point. This is compilation CD, not a full length album. It seems pretty natural that Grin wants to remind people about the band and presents few new songs after long studio absence. A Scanner Darkly is a result of 2015 recording session in Complex studio in Gdansk/Poland where they recorded 4 tracks:
1.A Scanner Darkly
2.I'm The Machine
3.Depression
4.Before Darkness Arrives
Those first 3 songs are heavy and groovy, a bit of death metal but not much shreds and a little flavor of industrial. They arranged songs with some aspect of technicality to the songs. They composed some nice catchy rhythms that have some relevance to post –thrash metal. Everything what comes out from this mix of genres is brutal but just eventually, it is not their purpose to go for extremity. Vocals are harsh crossover of death and hard core. Basically, Grin combo-packs few genres altogether and I do not try to separate those in my head. At first I want music respond positively to me so I can like it and they made me do it by variations of music they offer. When they go groovy on guitars and inject ideas with certain melodies then it just grabs me the most. They have it captured few times in each song and it`s very cool. They just need to compose it more often in the future. The third track which is called Depression is very TRAUMA`tized by the way if you like that band`s era of Daimonion/Suffocated In Slumber.
Promo 98 is a beginning of the band. 3 old songs sang in Polish. Decent music, you can hear it`s Grin but more mysterious as they used some keyboards. The sound is demo-like. OK but overall not much to memorize for longer. I treat this promo like collectors thing of underground fan. A Scanner Darkly gives you proper first impression of the band and your focus should go that way. It`s just hell a lot better.
Promo 98 tracklist:
5.Pięść
6.Wizjoner (Psychosen)
7.Grin
Grin today is:
Marcin “Kurt” Borzęcki (wokal, gitara)
Krzysztof “Dziadek“ Dobrowolski (gitara)
Piotr Kawalerowski (bas)
Kuba Przybylski (perkusja)
