Gloomy Grim
Obscure Metamorphosis
GrimmDistribution/Murdher Records
This EP presents Gloomy Grim as a band without any barriers that could not be broken in black metal. Obscure Metamorphosis consists of four songs that they approach differently.
Music is a bit unsettling, maybe it`s because the album sounds in depth, and has guitar tracks that do not sound linear which just tease my imagination the way I like: discovering more details in black metal is more enjoyable when music is a bit structured.
Dark, catchy melodies in The Lord Of Light, marching-refrain rhythm, lyrics and overall chemistry that is captured in this track, hooked me immediately. For me, it`s best song of this release that has natural, raw black metal force that is driving this track.
Other, like Impressive Physical Sight, has synths-guitar tending-orchestrations, like Dimmu Borgir, just with less use of synthesizers, so they sound more metal than symphonic.
Vocal expressions in the EP vary, which depends on music leads and mood of the song. Agathon - a singer of the band, he always sounds extreme, and has good feeling of music itself so his vocals sound well fitted in and confident.
Crawling Saviour is about guitar harmonies, melodic leads, balance between slower and faster moments with always great sounding black and death metal vocals (in some parts of songs Agathon sings similarly to David Vincent).
Stars Above Me is the quintessence of heavy guitar riffs and high pitched guitar shreds, very grim. Ambience moments are very atmospheric but not bombastic. Just mind you that it`s not much about speed in this release from Gloomy Grim, those Finns are doing just fine, at every music pace they offer in Obscure Metamorphosis.
