Jesuskomplex
Talheim Records
This one-man band with Swedish lyrics to his songs recorded an album that is not alike an everyday black metal releases. Great black metal vocals by C.L. in the song Åkarp and the slightly distorted guitars are rare signs of even metal on this album. Other song that sounds like alternative black metal is Inkognito. It is an atmospheric album that reflects on loneliness, struggles to cope in life, anxiety etc. This album is also an alternative to black metal in general, because when I hear melodic singing and rock-acoustic playing in Idag människa - imorgon jord, I immediately stop thinking about this record as a metal album at all.
A soothing sound of drums combined with other instruments that are rarer for metal (Jesuskomplex) surely brings a certain quality into the music as well. The sombreness of keyboards gives songs a specific character, while sound of piano may you feel cosy. Tracks 2,3 sound like alternative rock, C.L is an amateur singer, but somehow his vocals are likeable, because everyone could sing like him and identify with it as his/hers.
I don't know Swedish, but the album seems to have real-life situations in the form of monologues or dialogues (f.e in Evig är de dödas ryktbarhet - also excellent choirs in this song), which is something Opeth did on their last album In Cauda Venenum, and Pink Floyd did it before too ( The Wall). Things like those make you feel closer to reality while music itself is more surreal and grey.
The combination of rock with black metal vocals in Skilt åt att förenas, at least vocally works great, although the sombre keyboards also create a nice atmosphere in this song. There is a somewhat depressing black metal track by Förgätmiga when come to guitar play, but not much on this album is basically strict metal or strict rock. I have the impression that these two musical genres blend well together which go with negative emotional tints and sort of aggravations - Alternativ - uppvaknande.
Jesuskomplex has original rock and post black metal songs and excellent harsh and clean vocals .In case you are sick of a typical black metal, this album is a great alternative to be/find otherwise.
