Gatecloser
From The Wasteland
Sliptrick Records
First of all, I`d like to point out that this album from Italian band, consists of some varied songs. One of my favourite track is The Cow with melodic and bit melancholic vocals, groovy guitars and thrashier leads. Some keyboards sound similar to Amorphis from their Queen Of Time album, and Gatecloser is not even doom or death metal band. Also I like that super speed, neo-classical moment in the song played by guitarists.
More thrash metal and aggression comes in next track called Burn Him Alive that remind me bands like Annihilator, Megadeth, Sober Truth. Nice choruses, sharp guitar riffs and faster tempo of the song, all those sound like the album that basically has a strong opening.
White Bones is heavier and groovier song with melodic choirs. It`s not as tightly played song as previous two, but it`s just good for diversity of the record, and it`s kind a statement from the band, that they do not want to be the band who plays same songs over and over again, which they definitely do not.
Take My Hands is less interesting ballad ( at least in its first minutes) either vocally and instrumentally but if you like groove and decent solo that comes after that “ballad” part, it does not has to be necessarily a bad song of theirs, unless you decide otherwise by yourself...
Will Of The Dark is actually the proper ballad of the album. It`s played on acoustic guitar, song has sombre piano arrangements and spacey guitar solos. If you like Ozzy`s Mama, I'm Coming Home track, you should like hearing the beginning of Will Of The Dark from Gatecloser, with little changes to the song, music has a similar vibe to Ozzy`s hit.
Blackout has more guitar layers and chunky riffs, vocals just sound good and the songs is groovy and thrashy but not really strictly thrash metal.
Another faster track is Death Parade with solid dynamics and more technical approach from guitar player. Melodic vocals kick ass and music feels like they pushed their regime, more toward thrash metal this time.
After semi-paced and melodic song King Of The New Dawn, comes even heavier and groovier track of the album called Black March which sound pretty dense at times, and as most songs here, they know how to structure their music to keep it interesting.
It`s a good record of Gatecloser, they mix together elements of heavy, thrash and groove metal... Second and third track are best songs of the album, is what my guts tell me...
