Codex Nero
The Great Harvest Of Death
Liber Khaos Productions
Codex Nero is a new entity on Polish black metal scene. Their debut album The Great Harvest Of Death represents devotion to classic black metal, in terms of sound obscurity, raspy-growl vocals, raw guitar tuning. On the other hand, they added fresh elements into the music in form of clean, eminent vocals (The Unborn Spirit Awakens, Transmutations Code –very heavy, powerful song by the way), and more advanced drumming, where you can catch interesting accents and arrangements (Spiritual Hibernation). Album consists of aggressive black metal songs - The Unborn Spirit Awakens, but they rather play sporadically fast throughout the record. They have many atmospheric parts – like in track Khaos Vortex, which opens the madness of the album at slow pace, with marching drumming, bell tolls, and tormenting guitar groove that comes along. They mix harsh, melodic guitar shreds, with heavier periods - song Terra Nullius. Bleak sounding track entitled Pestis, also has its melodic and mourning guitar elements. Very crafty track on drums and guitars is Spiritual Hibernation, which I recommend you to check out. I think that track Misanthropy is very in the vein of second wave of black metal – obviously from 90`s era, and some guitar leads sound alike Swedish death metal at times. But don't take it for granted, The Great Harvest Of Death is more black metal oriented album, even if ambient, absolutely horrifying, ritualistic, witchy and demonic vibes you will find in track Mavrisma (song composed by project CORONA BARATHRI), may make you feel like it`s otherwise.
Lyrical content of the album capture senses around themes of desolation, misanthropy, nihilism, anxiety, so, around dark, unsettling subjects that emerge from (sub) conscious and experiences of (non)existence. It`s black metal album that has opened its gates for experiments, which is interesting.
