Catuvolcus
Voyageurs De L'Aube
Talheim Records/Deathbound Records
It is 2013 album of Catuvolcus and the last one that they released from what I have reconned. I do not know if this Canadian band is still active but some facts has changed since then- Deathbound Records is closed, Talheim Records are releasing their best albums nowadays...anyway; Voyageurs De L'Aube is so peculiar record that I have to give it some insight.
This album features a very skilled musicians: Dominic Lapointe on bass is known from Beyond Creation and Augury. His play on this record is perhaps 2-3 times faster than normally bass players do and he is very quick with his fingers. His progressive bass techniques sound incredible. You do not hear staff like this superbly talented guy every day (Canada has always being a country of amazing and technically playing musicians). For me, Dominic Lapointe`s music quality reminds me of Steve Di Giorgio, only this album is more about folk black metal songs. Who`s next: Étienne Gallo plays here on drums (ex Augury, ex Negativa...), Maxime Côté (also Hands Of Despair) plays guitars and Pierre-Aleksandr Plessix deals with vocals.
They play songs with elements of melodic death metal and black metal foremost. As I wrote before, it is also a combination of folk and metal . Vocals and song writing is catchy and it is what you get when listen to their music – melodic choruses, harsh and singing vocals sound like there is a spirit of a warrior in this band (Gaulish metal). Those more aggressive vocals are full of splendour and savage energy but you know,.. it`s metal, it`s pretty brutal too. Guitar sound takes you on a ride with their music because they gave it powerful production so the songs sound vigorous and dynamic.
...Album was recorded with guest musicians so the band`s music sounds even more universal. Beautiful violin parts in song Voyageurs Des Brumes Part II are performed by Carine Dubarry , Jake Rogers and Joel Violette deliver clean and catchy vocals – impact-full on music as well! Heart-warming acoustic guitars are played by Tim Rowland. Tracks Voyageurs Des Brumes Part I and Ressacs De L'Âme are more aggressive and intense songs, kept in melo-black/death metal style. Voyageurs Des Brumes Part II is more in the vein of Bathory epic albums. Thrill Of The Struggle is a cover song of other Canadian band Woods Of Ypres which I think is the most black metal track on this album. No doubt that songs of Catuvolcus are superbly entertaining and can quickly put listeners “on fire”.
