A guitarist Pascal Lanquetin and a drummer Bertrand Simonin are members of the other band Mindwarp which album I just reviewed few weeks ago. Check it out when you finish reading this off because music legacy of both bands is quite different. Other musicians that complete the line-up of Carcariass are: Jerome Lachenal on second guitar and Raphael Couturier - bass/vocals.
After third song I have asked myself, do they really need vocals to reach the goal of the album, whatever it is? I am not sure, it`s been just a little strange to hear typical instrumental songs with vocal tracks which bring down a shiny parts of the album a bit. I would understand their choice if they had a prog vocalist with a clean vocals because those songs needs it much more than death metal parts which seems to come out of nowhere. There are 4 sang songs and 9 instrumental ones and in my opinion they are much better band as instrumentalists only.
The album has very nice front artwork as you can see and even if they are not the greatest explorers of music universe though; those songs have certain quality and many enjoyable moments. Most of rhythm guitars are pretty decent but real fun starts with solo guitarist who plays his atmospheric and a bit progressive parts to keep you on the sonic wire. I do not know how many people realize that guitars are three times tracked in songs sometimes so it basically have 3 different riffs going all together and I have always liked those kind of ideas. It helps music out, to reach new horizons and go through different motions. It also builds up that picture in my mind of interstellar voyagers but they rather explore territories known for humanity than discover the new ones. This is Carcariass` new album is being like for me basically . It`s emotional and musically suspenseful but still more like the one you wish to have in your car for long adventure.
A music base for this album is death metal with a touch of progressive and experimental metal. I have to tell that I did not like it for the first time but any time I play it again, the album delights me more and more...
