Bofo Kwo (Fin) has made a black metal album that musically is not that far, but a little beyond comprehension of what is considered a traditional or typical black metal album. The only 2 elements in music that are very black metal are impure, shrieking vocals – dark in tone and in total absence of light. Faster fragments in music are another reflections of traditional black metal as people know it (Sarcofago, Mayhem, Aggressive Mutilator etc). I think that approx. 20 % of music on the album is fast, so do not expect much of storming riffs here, but the ones you will hear, sound “evilized” enough to get you into it (memorable leading riffs in chorus sequences of the song New Destination is very good) . Everything else on the record sound more experimental, kind of industrial and cold blooded. Songs do not have a massive sound of guitars and drums altogether, but more obscure and murky production. Lyrical content follows cannibal tribes, also in sci-fi realms. Songs feature female vocals often presented from very different angles, which can be associated to ghostly whispers, oriental, melodic, troubled, ritualistic and fragile vocalizing, wicked laughs... Also there are some speaking-vocals from the reportage perspective. My overall impression on these kind of singing is that you can tell, that there were a lot of improvisation while they were making songs for this album which sometimes works, other times those vocals just sounds bad and lame.
Track Plate Of Hate consists of very best and catchy guitar riffs of the album. Marching drums also run my interest toward the music of Bofo Kwo. The other song where riffs count is heavy and shredding-some black metal track called Green Leviathan. On the other hand, song like Second Sun is completely different, sounds claustrophobic and evil, some riffs and pace remind me The Return album by Bathory. Slower song at times is the one called Epic, where band plays as if they wanted you to feel aversion because barely any riffs here and atmosphere are to be liked. Even more hideous and slow burning track is The Massacre, which seems the album's most experimental piece of music (the beginning of the track surely is, cacophony of sounds may make you feel nauseous). Bullets Of Despair has odiously distorted bass, and it`s half fast and half atmospheric song with crunchy guitar sound and nicely keyboards arrangements which pumping despair into the music. So, the band enriched their sound by adding keyboards and electronic effects into song writing which made the album sound better but weirder, moreover still dark and mysterious.
Sometimes bad things in their music are the ones most needed to make some kind of impact, and I like this album for band`s original approach to black metal and overall fearless, musical experimentations.
