Assatur
Where Chaos Reigned
Great Dane Records
It`s a compilation album thus my review will refer to some band`s facts and to the music itself of course. Assatur is a death metal band from Finland for those of you who did not know.
Tracks from 1 to 4 are the latest offering from them. The material was recorded in 2018 and songs are in the vein of old school death metal. They sound very much alike classic Scandinavian bands; Carnage, Nihilist, but album production is rawer and tracks sound more like a demo in general. Opening song Outburst Of Pandemonium with its creepy melodies in the beginning and death metal ride that the band continues to play on with their rough version of metal, brings some good memories from the past of old school music (Entombed) and presence (Eteritus, Krypts). Yes, from time to time Assatur plays some riffs that I heard on other albums already but I do not really care. Finnish or Swedish death metal is my thing and I see no reason to dislike Where Chaos Reign.
Tracks 5-8 come from 2015 EP/demo Nameless Rites. Sound wise, these songs are very similar to first four songs, so the band continues to deliver solid dose of brutal but atmospheric, yet melodic (The Gate) and some crushingly heavy (Ethereal Form) death metal.
Tracks 9-12 - unlikely to other songs on this album have been recorded differently. The songs come from 2012 EP/demo entitled From The Depths Of Madness. The sound is more massive, the music is more brutal and faster which causes some chaotic moments but nothing that could provoke me to throw curses on them. To your knowledge, some lyrics of Assatur are inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.
Tracks from 5 to 12 have been remastered in 2019 which sound slightly but not much different from original releases. Okay. I think it`s time to wrap up this review.
I do not accept Where Chaos Reigned to be their proper debut album yet because it consists only of various demos from different period of times on it. The band do not sound or perform that great yet, but they show off that they are devoted to old school death metal and I am glad I have heard some good music from this release.
