Ascent
Don`t Stop When You Walk Through The Hell
Sliptrick Records
I have never been in Russia but Siberia is a place that pops up from time to time in a media to intrigue my curiosity. It must not be that dead cold weather as it lies in some stories if it`s possible to set a band like Ascent and play metal, obviously.
This is first album of this female fronted death metal band and the album is very creative piece of work. They have tendencies to use their technical skills to maximum and try to build newer forms within death metal but without breaking any boundaries. Rhythms and dynamics in their songs (False Gestures, The Punisher) are important along with hard core guitar break ups. Ascent is not far away from thrash metal in aggressive parts and vocals. Actually it brings difficulties to say for sure if vocals are definitely thrashy or death metal. I think it`s a blend of both and the lines are done much better than many other female vocalists out there could do. To go further and to attract more joy to what they do, Ascent still leaves no good melodies (Dead Silence, Matter) and groove (Useless, Chaos Bless) so the album appealing to people who like death metal with open range of influences. They sound a little as a band from my areas and I am happy to compare them to Saratan, The No Mads, Banisher, Atrophia Red Sun or international Arch Enemy. I wish the bass is more exposed as in the beginning of Lucifer song. It gives them more space and dimension to the sound and could be vital for the band if they follow this trail more often.
Don`t Stop When You Walk Through The Hell is a perspective and intense debut from this Russians and I like to play it anytime I can. I am looking forward for their next music encounters to see how they progress.
