Anaxagor
Great Dane Records
It`s old school album, you know, you can`t go wrong about it when listening to death metal bands from Great Dane Records. This time, it`s more about thrashing death metal from the French band Anaxagor. Album was produced by Sylvain from the band Exocrine and I think the sound of the record is smashing.
Very thrashing riffage, aggression and fast picking is how both guitarists of the band (Antonin and Fédric) will treat you with their quick and punching guitar riffs. If you are still crying your eyes out over the fact that Slayer has left off the scene, then maybe Raining Blood moment in track Stomping On A Face will stop you from committing suicide. Songs of the band have some guitar technicality going on which I like, and some melodic death metal fragments (The Plagues) that tie the anger and aggression slickly with something to remember which are those melodic riffs that Anaxagor drops in the music from time to time. Frame Of Thrash and Panopticon are punishing and powerful songs which Anaxagor play in the vein of death metal (faster drumming, darker vocals) by which the band sound more brutal. Still, tendency of the songs is that they always come back to what they seem to do best here, which is intense, superbly aggressive thrashier style, and surely, Anaxagor does not like to stay with one music idea in their songs for too long. So, pace and creativity is what is changing for most times in music of Anaxagor. I like speed and fast moments in songs, also the symbiosis of drummer Jeremie with both guitarists give this album old school metal vibe but their play is more complex, and arsenal of ripping` guitar riffs is like a bite in your neck. A bassist Mathieu seems to follow guitar patterns of guitarists which keeps his bass play through the songs in their shadow for a bit too much. And Alex on vocals is doing it deeper with his throat, more death metal way.
Anaxagor is about thrash/death metal songs and it can`t really be said otherwise. This album can be unpredictable sometimes, but it contains quality and predatory songs overall!
