Agressor
Satan's Sodomy Of Death
GrimmDistribution / La Cripta Metal Shop
It is a compilation album of late 80`s demos of legendary French death thrash metal band Agressor. When I think particularly about that era, there are 3 French bands that stuck in my head forever - Massacra, Loudblast and Agressor. Back then, it was all I knew about French extreme metal. I knew Agressor from their debut album Neverendind Destiny which I`ve heard maybe 20-30 times, but it was approximately 25 years ago, all I remember – it was it! A solid death/thrash metal album that made me remember name Agressor...I never heard any of their demos, so now is an opportunity to catch up with their older material.
The Merciless Onslaught is an archaic and chaotic thrash metal demo with influences of Destruction, Possessed, Slayer.Even so, I think Agressor has had their musical identity from their beginnings as the band. They just had no good production for their songs which would show their real potential...
Sound of Satan's Sodomy was improved a bit but not as much, to say that they sounded here better, just more or less the same as on previous, obscure sounding demo. Their fast and chaotic thrash/death metal was getting sharper and better, as it is in track Uncontrolled Desire. Generally music was fast with heavier moments, but still quite archaic and rough, with little more technical guitar work going on. However, there is one song, (It's Pandemonium) that sounds like a crossover hard core/thrash - not how Agressor usually played their music...
Okey, next is Mixed Rehearsal - demo from 1988, which is thrash with more death metal shreds. Better songs are Bloody Corpse – fast, technical, chaotic track, and thrashy but heavier song Dark Power that reminds me German thrash and bands like Assassin, Deathrow...Super fast song is also Neverending Destiny which if I remember correctly features on their debut record, among other songs which are on this compilation album too.
These 3 demos surely have Agressor style death thrash metal songs. Nowadays, many people would say they do not sound technical, but in old days they played technical for me. Production of those 3 releases is basically a shit storm but still, it`s worth checking out this classic, early stuff of the band.
...And last but not least, a demo Orbital Distortion from 1989. Here, you can listen to other versions of two older tracks from previous demo, which are Bloody Corpse and Elemental Decay. One new track is a violent thrash/death metal song Paralytic Disease. This demo has much better quality and songs by its sound gives you a character of Agressor`s music which is a sharp, energetic, aggressive and super intense death/thrash. These 3 songs gives you a best sense of what was going to come, and how they were going to play on their first album Neverending Destiny from 1990.
Satan's Sodomy Of Death brings nice memories when I used to play Agressor`s music a lot!
