Eigenstate Zero
Sensory Deception
Independent
Eigenstate Zero is one man studio only project but one person can sometimes literally move the mountains and handle music as good as regular bands do when having 3 + members. I ensure you that Eigenstate Zero is this kind of project! So, take it easy and do not be confused by thinking that something go wrong on this album only because it`s done by one devoted to music person. To my ears, Christian appears as a very good drummer (and a programmer), also a stunning and skilled guitarists and diverse vocalist who gave this is album death metal sound that is close to production of early Edge Of Sanity albums which means it`s pretty Swedish sound that people like me admire since Left Hand Path.
The album is quite long (total time over 75 minutes) but it captures so many good songs that mentioning some of them is something I must do.
Of course, there are few familiar, Swedish sounding tracks; 1984-2, Fringes, Communion which are dissonant melodeath tracks which give me so much impression of At The Gates the way guitars work here. These are simultaneously brutal and melodic songs while sound is massive.
The other tracks like Fringe, Decoherence, Zentropic (periodic groove moments with nice use of classical guitar) have drum blast beats and are faster in general meaning. These songs are for headbanging because as you may know, the music can make you do it sometimes.
In Eigenstates and Zentropic in particular, Christian challenges a bit his ability to play as fast as he can which he had in that momentum when he was recording the album and it works well for the versatility of the album. The songs have some electronic arrangements which flavor death metal nature of the songs. The Nihilist is where electronic moments remind me of Jordan Rudess who does similar tricks in Dream Theater songs. I take all those experiments with music (it`s basically mix of different music genres) as something that sound original in realm of extreme music of this and other songs. Even more unexpected tunes you will find in Strangelets where melodeath find it`s jazzy (or so) spaces but in Transhuman some strange riffs become even stranger with time and the song has a beautiful, crafty progressive passages a`la Opeth that sound weird sometimes. Godeater with vocal chants, overall atmosphere is pretty good song as well.
I am telling you, the album has a lot of interesting turns (no twists would improve it) and Sensory Deception is incredibly melodic album in its brutality.
There is a closing track where Christian tries to sing with clean vocals, a bit carelessly (or he just can`t better) but it`s one of those none death metal track on the album that are obviously very different from other songs that maybe even should not belong here.
My favourite songs are 1984-2, Strangelets and epic Transhuman. These are the songs that thrive in the mazes of instrumental abundance.
Vocals in general are something between growls and black metal shrieks with many experimentation going on (Comatorium) but it`s all good stuff with a lot of word-well -articulated roars.
For me, the album is a stylish death metal kill made in Sweden. Full recommendations.
